Who We Are

Promet Steel was founded in 1995 by two steel industry veterans, Chicago natives Nick Laphen and Rodney Egle. Beginning in East Chicago, Indiana with just a small warehouse and a single piece of equipment, Promet Steel has since grown into a multi-facility steel service center with over 70 employees and an extensive inventory of direct mill-sourced prime and excess-prime steel coil products.
In 2000, Promet increased its footprint within the industry with the expansion to our current 55,000-square-foot production facility in Chicago’s south side Pullman neighborhood. The expansion continued in 2005 when Promet acquired Suburban Steel Supply in Frankfort, Illinois adding two additional in-house slitting lines and a 25,000 square-foot production facility in order to provide even greater service to our rapidly expanding customer base. Another milestone was reached in 2012 when Promet earned an ISO 9001 certification, affirming our ability to apply a consistent quality management system to our customer’s growing requirements.
In 2021, Promet Steel entered a new era of leadership as ownership of our privately held business transitioned to second-generation family management. Continuing that commitment to growth and continuous improvement, Promet expanded further in 2025 with the acquisition of Heidtman Steel’s East Chicago, Indiana facility. This expansion added a high-capacity slitting line and an additional 120,000 square feet of warehouse space, further strengthening our processing capabilities. Now more than ever, we remain focused on meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations as we continue to grow into the future.
For nearly 30 years, Promet Steel has operated with a committed dedication to credibility and trust. From sales negotiation all the way through shipping and invoicing, it is this commitment that drives our organization and provides our customers with confidence and peace of mind. At Promet Steel, our culture and values are governed by 4 simple directives:
By successfully applying these directives as a management tool at all levels of our organization, we are able to achieve the credibility, openness, trust, and risk necessary to cultivate long-term relationships with our customers.
